Signs You May Need a New Water HeaterKnowing when to replace your water heater can be difficult. At Dan’s Plumbing & Septic, we help homeowners and business owners in St. Paul and surrounding areas with all types of plumbing services, including water heater replacement. Read on to learn some of the early signs that it may be time to replace your water heater.

6 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Water Heater

1. Standing Water Around The Base of Your Water Heater – Over time the bottom of your water heater can corrode. Once this happens, you’ll likely notice a small amount of water pooling around the bottom of your water heater. This is a sign of a leak and that it’s likely time to replace your water heater.
2. Cold or Luke Warm Water – If you notice suddenly that your water is not heating normally, then it’s likely that your water heater is malfunctioning. This could be a sign that a heating element inside your water heater needs to be replaced or that your entire unit needs to be changed out.
3. More Than 15 Years Old – Most water heater manufacturers suggest replacing your water heater every 10-15 years. If you’ve recently purchased a home, it’s a good idea to hire a plumbing company to inspect your water heater to ensure it’s working correctly.
4. Frequent Water Heater Repairs – If you’re repairing your water heater multiple times, it may be time to think about replacing it. Plumbing repairs can add up, especially when you’re continuously fixing a unit over 10-15 years old.
5. Metallic Smell or Taste – If you notice a metallic smell or taste when drinking your water, it could be because your water heater has started to corrode. This typically occurs with older water heaters and is a sign that you should replace your unit before it corrodes enough to cause a significant leak.
6. Rusty Stains in Your Sink – If you notice rust forming in your sink, it could be caused by sediment inside your water heater. You don’t want to ingest rust or chemicals, so it’s always wise to replace your water heater when you see signs of rust in any of your sinks.
