Tips for Septic System CareIf you live in a home with a septic system, you can expect it to last between 20-40 years if you use it properly, and have it regularly maintained. Not only do you want your septic system to last for as long as possible, but you also want to prevent a major septic system failure that can mean a big, smelly mess. Dan’s Plumbing & Septic can help with septic system maintenance and repair when you need it. Our team makes the following recommendations for keeping your septic system working functioning well:

1. Do not use a garbage disposal: A garbage disposal is not safe to use if you have a septic system on your property. When you put things down a garbage disposal, the disposal breaks up the items into very small pieces. These pieces can cause serious damage to the plumbing and the septic system.
2. Spread out your water usage when possible: It is also better for your septic system if you are able to conserve water so that you do not flush more water through the system than it can withstand each day. Using too much water in one day can overwhelm your drainfield.
3. Do not use powered soaps: Powered soap does not fully dissolve and actually goes through your septic system like small pieces of solids.
4. Do not use antiseptic cleaners: Antiseptic cleaners interfere with the normal function of your septic system and will not allow your system to properly separate the solids and liquids.
5. Do not put any solids or other chemicals down your toilets or sinks: As you might imagine, chemicals, solids and other materials will damage the septic tank.
6. Complete routine maintenance: Routine maintenance and septic pumping will ensure that your septic system can last for many years to come.
7. Protect your septic system from winter weather: Each fall, you can take a few simple steps to protect your system from the elements. Covering your tank and insulating it with straw will protect it from freezing during the winter months.
8. Take note of anything unusual: If you hear a gurgling noise or notice a foul smell or anything that is unusual happening with your septic system, have it checked immediately.
